Carlos Cabo - Sculpture artist from Spain

Minimalist and abstract, timelessly sophisticated elegance. The ceramic sculptures created by Spanish artist Carlos Cabo are both bizarre and novel. Men, women, the elderly, and children are all transformed into abstract geometric shapes, resembling vines, roots, and octopus tentacles. Each figure's head becomes extremely small, singing upward in the same posture, as if chanting a requiem for nature.

As for why he created this series of ceramic works, Carlos Cabo explains:
"I grew up in the countryside as a child, and many things in rural life left a deep impression on me. When night falls, shadows from my memories emerge from the subconscious, hovering around me."

These ceramic pieces portray that very sense of déjà vu.

Carlos Cabo creates elegant and amazing abstract figurative ceramic sculptures. Clay is incredibly malleable and versatile, allowing artists to mold the material into a wide array of forms. Carlos masters in clay art and he creates figure sculptures out of clay that reinterpret the human anatomy and forms of sea creatures in an abstract way.

The power of texture is the focus of Spanish artist Carlos Cabo’s work. The clay he works with has a certain malleability that allows him to sculpt it into abstract forms—but it’s the texture of these sculptures he finds more interesting than their form or color. His pieces are devoid of color, but they have a luminous quality thanks to the terra sigillata coating that covers each sculpture. He also uses ceramic elements such as wood or metal dowels or wires to add structure to his pieces.

Carlos Cabo’s impressive pieces take their inspiration from the Earth, and their dark tones convey the changing nature of the season. The artist looks towards nature as an endless source of inspiration, a sentiment clearly reflected in his work. His work is like a window into the natural world, one where everything is more complicated and irregular than previously imagined.
