Designer Marcel Breuer created the Wassily chair in 1925, a groundbreaking piece that revolutionized traditional seating design. The chair’s innovative nature is evident in its complete departure from conventional seat forms, resembling a machine more than a piece of furniture, as Breuer himself noted. The Wassily chair was the first to use electroplated seamless steel tubing, replacing the wood typically used in traditional chairs. Additionally, the design was fully compatible with machine manufacturing, utilizing standard components for mass production. A new modern furniture manufacturing process was introduced, incorporating screw-connected parts that significantly enhanced assembly efficiency and simplified transportation.
