PH Artichoke Ceiling Lamps

PH Antichoke reminds me of its original piece which is common silver or white versions, this old piece feels softer and more graceful. The light diffuses warmly, like a goddess smiling gently. The photos don’t do it justice due to color differences; they can only capture half of its beauty. As expected of a “goddess,” the price is quite high, ranging from over $10,000 to $20,000 depending on the size. Surprisingly, it’s selling well among the wealthy. Having one of these lamps in your home is like owning a Hermès bag or a Tiffany diamond ring – a symbol of both wealth and refined taste.   

   The PH Artichoke Lamp (or Pinecone Lamp) was designed by Danish designer Poul Henningsen in 1958. Henningsen aimed to create a lamp that wouldn’t cause glare from any angle. The lamp is made up of 72 precisely positioned leaves, arranged in 12 rows of 6, ensuring that the light source is never directly visible. This design guarantees a glare-free light distribution, providing soft, even illumination that’s both practical and beautiful.

Henningsen, who believed in glare-free lighting, also designed a series of PH products, including the famous PH5, PH Globe Lamp, and PH 3/2 Table Lamp. These classic designs have stood the test of time. Even more than half a century later, they remain popular, with high resale prices even in the second-hand market.

A chrome inner diffuser also assists in the proper even reflection of the light source. The metal halide sources are used in the largest of the Artichoke fixtures. For years, a number of companies have tried to replicate the Artichoke fixture, only a handful have made a replica that is at all geometrically and cosmetically similar.

The Poulsen Artichoke Pendant comes in 4 colors and 4 different sizes. The leaves are laser-cut steel to produce shape lines reflective of modern design. The entire fixture is mounted by aluminum and aircraft cables to hold the unusually heavy weight of the light. A heavy duty UL Listed junction box is generally required to handle the weight of this pendant.
