Cesca Chair
Cesca Chair
1928 Marcel Breuer Seska Chair
The Seska Chair was born in 1928 and was designed shortly after Brauyer left Bauhaus College. In Brauye's naming sequence, the Seska chair was originally named "B32". After that, due to daughter Seska. Brauye's favorite was changed to the more familiar "Sesca Chair" today.
Like the Vasily chair in 1925, the Seska chair is still made of stainless steel pipe in the structure. Compared to the Vasily chair, Seska is more adventurous and innovative in structure.
It breaks through the structural convention of the foot of the chair to be supported by four or three points, and instead adopts unilateral landing as the structural form of the support part. The seemingly simple and smooth S-shaped steel pipe structure needs to take into account the load bearing, the stability of the human body in the seat, the stability of the station, and the comfort of the sedentary period, the test of the structure can be imagined.
In terms of material, compared to the leather and metal feeling of the Vasili chair, the original Seska chair used woven rattan as the material of the back and face of the chair, exquisite, natural and more humble into the overall indoor environment. Brauye explains why he chose to knit rattan: R"I already had the concept of spanning the seat with fabric in tension as a substitute for thick upholstery. I also wanted a frame that would be resilient and elastic [as well as] achieve transparency of forms to achieve both visual and physical lightness."
“The concept of replacing thick cushions with tension-based fabrics has come to mind in my mind, and in addition, I want a framework that is both tough and elastic to achieve both visual and physical lightness.
Seska chair may not be as impressive as Vasily chair, its innovative structural design and material to future generations brought inspiration, so that it is in the history of modern design is not inferior to Vasily chair.
Today, Seska chairs are mainly made and sold by American furniture company Knoll, adding handrail version, seat cushion version and other versions to the original design. Rattan knitting has also added a machine knitting version in addition to hand knitting since 2020
